There’s a first time – and a second time – for everything!

The L.A. Matheson Secondary senior boys made history this past weekend, winning the school’s first banner in the tournament’s 34-year history, while the Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary Panthers won the junior division for the second straight year.

Senior Tournament

In the senior final, the L.A. Matheson Mustangs narrowly defeated the Tamanawis Wildcats 80-77 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory to take the 2026 tournament.

“We led when it was 2-0 and we didn’t lead again until it was something like 73-72, which was the last three minutes of the game,” said Mustangs head coach Tyler Ram. “In the fourth quarter, we started to give the MVP the ball in the high post, and he started either scoring or finding guys that were open, so that kind of flipped the switch for us. We made the right amount of shots and ended up winning.”

In the closing minutes, forward Joven Sanghera hit a three-point shot and a layup with an assist from centre Damien Onokpite to put the Mustangs up by three. Tamanawis answered with a three and a layup of their own. In the remaining 45 seconds, Sanghera drained another three from the corner to reclaim the lead and Onokpite sunk two free throws, with defense holding the Wildcats to a final score of 80-77.

“When they won the final, it felt like some of the boys were in a dream state – they couldn’t believe it actually happened,” said athletic director Marik Sandhu. “Before the game, I overheard a few of them being like, ‘I dreamed of this in Grade 8 and 9, we’re actually here! Let’s finish the mission!’ Well, mission accomplished, one of their dreams of high school came true and it’s very well-deserved for all of them.”

The final capped off a series of hard-earned, high-scoring wins, including their opener against the 成人视频 Christian Falcons (98-85), the quarterfinal facing the École Panorama Ridge Thunder (85-58) and a neck-and-neck semifinal with the Fleetwood Park Dragons (94-89).

For L.A. Matheson, the championship that was arguably years in the making as the boys had come close to winning the junior and senior banners in the past two years.

“Last year, we lost in the semifinals to Tamanawis, and the year before that, this team was in juniors and we won third place, so we had two straight final four appearances,” said Sandhu. “Honestly, it was a great matchup with Tamanawis since they were the ones that knocked us out last year – we didn’t need to fire our guys up, they were fired up for this game, they wanted it.”

The win was also meaningful for the coaching staff, who have mentored the current team over the last five years, witnessing their collective hard work and dedication culminate in winning the classic.

“Between Tyler and I, we both had not ever beaten Tamanawis so that was a great way to get that W, to win it in that type of fashion,” said Sandhu.

“I was telling the boys before the game, 2009 was the first time I played in the tournament – some of them were born in 2008, 2009, so I’d been trying to win this thing since they were born,” said Ram with a laugh. “For it to finally happen, it was great.”

After the tournament, Onokpite was named Most Valuable Player. Sanghera and guard Jaiden Shergill were named First Team All Stars and guard Jashan Mahal was named Most Inspirational Player.

Junior Tournament

Meanwhile, the Lord Tweedsmuir boys returned to the junior tournament as defending champions, extinguishing the Fleetwood Park Dragons 64-39 in the final to win back-to-back titles.

The Panthers started off strong with a 66-48 win over the Elgin Park Orcas, followed by a close quarterfinal of 60-55 against the Holy Cross Crusaders, avenging an earlier loss in league play. In the semifinal, they kept the lead ahead of the Semiahmoo Thunderbirds 66-42, making good on their strategy to outwork the other teams on the court.

“Every team we played is a good team so it was always a battle,” said Panthers head coach Raj Bagry. “Every loose ball means something, hustle plays go a long way – you just have to get a few extra possessions than the other team, that’s all you can do.

“We started off really well against Fleetwood, we were hot on the three-point line. A lot of work on the boards but the big thing was the three-point shooting in the first half. In the second half, they wanted to play a tougher game and it caused some headaches but we reset and went from there.”

Bagry said that teamwork and trust in each other has proven to be instrumental in their repeat success, along with the work ethic of the Grade 9 and 10s both during practices and the regular season, as well as on their own time.

“They put in a lot of time when nobody’s watching them,” he said. “When they’re in the gym working on their game, that extra time will pay off.”

Congratulations, L.A. Matheson Mustangs and Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers, the 2026 senior and junior 成人视频 Basketball Classic champions!
