SFU film academy gives 成人视频 students experience in front of & behind the camera
The SFU Film Academy, an ongoing partnership between 成人视频 and the university, hosted its fifth year of the monthlong summer program, teaching Grade 8 to 11 students the art of filmmaking and giving them hands-on experience with shooting, directing, acting and editing.
Aspiring student filmmakers got their first taste of Hollywood this summer as they wrote, directed, acted in and edited short films in the SFU film academy.
In its fifth year, the month-long program is a partnership between 成人视频 and SFU 成人视频’s , offering Grade 8 to 11 students a platform to learn filmmaking while earning course credits for the upcoming school year.
For teacher Lev Mihalik, leading the program comes from a place of passion for filmmaking as a cinephile and a former film student.
“In my high school, there was a big film program, which is how I modeled what I’m doing here,” he said. “I started learning about film and editing, and through all my old teachers, I started getting editing gigs. I started teaching film in 2007 through that network and it’s just what I’ve been doing forever.”
While the film academy was previously hosted at district school sites, this year’s program was entirely at SFU 成人视频, with professional equipment supplied by the university. The class of 22 students gained hands-on experience with cameras, boom mics and editing software to learn the ins and outs of pre- and post-production, audio recording, screenwriting, acting, directing and cinematography.
“We try to inspire them to see beyond their regular classroom walls,” said Mihalik. “It gets them into a different setting – the location is so big, and the kids hopefully get a feeling that they’re involved with something big.”
Initially, students undergo a skills assessment where they write a script and shoot a scene, and then analyze it together as a class. Based on feedback from Mihalik and others, students re-shoot the scene in order to learn how to improve their abilities quickly.
成人视频 also have the opportunity to sit in on talks from industry professionals at the Vancouver Academy of Dramatic Arts, Vancouver Acting School, Vancouver Film School and the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts.
Earlier this month, the students participated in a workshop by Jerry Trimble, an actor, stuntman and former world kickboxing champion who has had roles in Heat, Charlie’s Angels, Mission: Impossible III, The Flash and Supernatural. Trimble imparted life advice to students interested in breaking into the entertainment industry.
“When I do workshops with young actors, it’s teaching them how to become the best version of themselves, because if you really get to know who you are, your creativity will soar and the stronger you’ll become,” he said. “The closer you get to the best version of you, the more creative and the easier it is to collaborate with people and to get out of your comfort zone.”
With Vancouver often referred to as Hollywood North, Mihalik said he has seen countless students go from having never acted or touched a camera to working in the film industry. But he also emphasizes that the skills taught in the film academy aren’t just for working in film, they can be applied anywhere.
“These skills are so transferrable into any career, whether they want to do presentations for corporate work, be self-employed entrepreneurs, showcase their products,” he said. “There are ways to make your video product look better and those are the skills I’m really trying to make them understand, not so much the film industry process.”
